External link icons render differently across browsers and cannot be hidden via Site Setup. Unchecking "Mark external links" probably should do it, but it doesn't work. This is a default Plone bug, but we will need to deal with it in some way before our final release (like hiding the external link icon using CSS). It would also eliminate browser inconsistencies until Plone fixes this.
